Leaking cartridges are very unusual, but can happen due to extreme temperature changes in transit, or excessive pressure in transit. In almost all cases, a leaking cartridge is still usable and will not damage the printer.
How to clean up a leaky cartridge:
- Wipe off the cartridge with a damp paper towel or cotton swab (you can also use rubbing alcohol to clean it) and observe where the point of leaking is occurring – it will most likely be the nozzle or the air/breathing hole
- Put the nozzle of the cartridge face down against a layer of paper towels and give it a very slight squeeze to expel any excess ink until no ink is freely leaking from the nozzle without further pressure or squeezing
Note: It is helpful to use gloves when handling leaky cartridges.
